I have been working in the industry for fifteen years.
These are the 3 simple pieces of advice I'd give anyone starting out
It's all about People and Relationships.
- You get chosen to do a job because people trust you to deliver.
- Once you have earned their trust, they will use you again and again.
- The hard part is getting the opportunity to prove you can deliver.
- Find a way to get close to the decision-makers: tea-maker!
- The rest will follow.
Previous Life Experience Matters
- Having a solid vault of interesting work experience helps heaps.
- A degree is not a prerequisite but it is proof you can apply yourself.
- A speciality or unique access can be the key.
- Many cinematographers have started by working in kit rental houses.
- The rest will follow.
Getting Results and Humility are Golden
- The culture values efficacy and humility.
- It is never "I", it is always "We".
- It is never "A problem", it is always "A solution".
- Always back the team and find a way through.
- The rest will follow.
Build strong relationships with the best people possible.
Nurture the unique and valuable skills you can bring to the table.
Practice humility and get things done!
