It's more expensive

Ocean shoots require boats and specialised underwater diving and camera systems, which invariably adds a 30% margin to the shoot cost.

There is less time

Although rebreathers help in certain situations to even the score, one generally has less time in a day to film compared to a topside shoot.

The subject is elusive

Most of the action in the ocean is invisible from the surface. Being in the right place make all the difference to the outcome of a £200,000 shoot.

Technical & Free Diving Skills

I have thirty years of freediving and spearfishing experience, have thousands of hours on SCUBA, and am CCR (Rebreather) certified to a depth of 100m.

Open Ocean Experience

Expertise and proven capability to resolve fast moving natural events such as baitballs and fast moving animal underwater.

Benthic Grip Work

Expertise and proven ability to resolve small subjects that are anchored or operating on the ocean surface, using underwater tripods, sliders and other stabilisation equipment.

Cold Water Experience

I have worked in both the Antarctic and the Arctic, and am well practiced in diving in freezing water, in overhead and ice flow enviroments.

Drone Experience

I have extensive experience operating ocean drones, from solo flying to capturing footage on smaller drones in challenging conditions.

Dual Operator Expertise

In addition, I specialise in dual operating on high-end drones like the Inspire 2 and 3. This allows for more complex shots delivering cinematic-quality footage.

Life on Our Planet

Worked on a sequence for the opening episode of this series for producer Adam Chapman, filming baitballs off the coast of South Africa. The purpose of the sequence was to establish the assemblage of life forms that have evolved over the last 3.7 billion years. Drone footage shot with Stefan Van Zyl.
