How to Train For Freediving While Watching Netflix On Your Couch

You do not need to get wet to train for freediving.

Many of the world's greatest freedivers train dry

Here are three ways I prepare for an upcoming freediving trip without getting in the water.

Apnea Tables
  • These tables are designed to help you reduce your consumption of oxygen and increase your tolerance to higher levels of Carbon Dioxide
  • I use the Freedive App on my phone for this
  • Doing these while sitting or lying on a couch is ideal.
Walking Breathold
  • Hold your breath and walk for 30 seconds.
  • Stop and breath
  • Walk back to where you started, breathing normally
  • Repeat the above and walk a little further while holding your breath each time.
  • Repeat 6 times
Negative Breatholds
  • Sit or lie down on a couch
  • Do a full exhale and then hold your breath
  • Hold for 20 seconds and then breathe the remaining 40 seconds
  • Repeat the above and try and hold a bit longer
  • Repeat the above 6 times

Breath hold exercises are very taxing on your body.

I would recommend no more than two to three sessions a week, with a minimum of a day break in between.

Training dry like this is way safer than training wet, especially if you are training alone.
