Struggling to keep your footage stable underwater?

Stable, "objective" camera moves underwater are preferred by high-end production companies when making wildlife nature documentaries.

Here are two ways to improve the stability of your camera moves when using a DSLR-style camera in an underwater housing.

Make Your Small Housing Negative by Adding Weight.
  • Add weight to the housings so it sinks if let go.
  • This will increase the stability significantly.
  • Have a clip system attached to the camera housing so you can clip it off in an emergency.
Wear Long Spearfishing Fins
  • Long finds provide a much smoother propulsion through the water.
  • This translates into smoother camera moves.
  • Carbon fins are optimal, but plastic long fins will also do the job.

Try these two methods along with improving your buoyancy control and you will see a significant improvement in the overall stability of your underwater motion imagery.
