The Three Wildlife Cinematographers Who Had The Greatest Influence on My Craft.

I was fortunate to assist three talented and highly motivated cinematographers at the beginning of my career.

I owe my shooting style and approach to the craft to these three people:

Justin Maguire - The Man With the Golden Eye
  • A consummate professional
  • Tenacious as a honey badger in heat
  • A poetic eye that can create magic where no magic exists
  • Wonderful dry sense of humour and a great companion
Didier Noirot - French Flair and Provenance
  • One of Jacques Cousteau's underwater cameramen
  • Lyrical eye and a master of the long poetic take
  • Full of great stories and mirth
  • Deeply committed to his craft
Doug Anderson - The Master Technician
  • Hugely intentional and Strategic Thinker
  • Superb eye combined with a grunty physicality and discipline
  • Pound for pound across multiple specialities, the best underwater wildlife cinematographer  in the world
  • Hugely supportive of upcoming talent.

The biggest downside of becoming a cinematographer in your own right is that you rarely get to spend time in the field with other cinematographers who practice your speciality

So for those out there who are lucky enough to be assisting...

DON'T RUSH YOUR APPRENTICESHIP

I am going to be sharing more of what I have learned from these three cinematographers in an upcoming course on underwater cinematography.
