What I do
Director of PhotographyStock Archives Fine Art Prints Underwater Cinematography CourseDeveloping a Mentorship Program has made me realise how significant diving has been in my life.
I have been diving seriously since I was nineteen years old, and it has become a foundational practice in my life.
Through diving, I have forged lifelong friendships, experienced proper adventure, and built a career as an underwater cinematographer that has been deeply rewarding on many fronts.
One extraordinary benefit of diving that very few people are aware of, even those who dive, is that it shuts down the monkey mind, that part of your consciousness that is incessantly worrying about the future and the past.
Slip into that watery embrace, and all thoughts of the world above disappear. This experience is deeply calming, akin to the feeling you get after a deep meditation or a cold water immersion.
Dive to escape and resurface to be reminded of what it's like to be grounded and calm.
Diving also allows for intimate animal interactions. On land, viewing wild animals is generally restricted to a vehicle.
Underwater, the animals are experienced up close. This powerful and transformative intimacy creates a richer connection with the natural world.
Getting into diving does not have to be expensive. My advice is to start by snorkelling in rock pools. This is a safe and cost-effective way to access the diving experience and to build confidence using a mask and snorkel.
Then, if you want more, progress to free-dive training, an entry-level SCUBA course, or both. Whichever discipline you choose, you will not return to dry land the same person.
